Install Essentials 504D Double Guard Stinger Shock Sensor Review

Installed it on a Viper 3002 on a 81 Jeep CJ7. It's a necesity as the onboard shock sensor doesn't work well by itself without turning it all the way up and that will set the alarm off instead of getting the cherp you want for the inital warning.
You must install this where it will pick up the most vibration. I limited myself to as far as the wiring harness would go as I didn't have it any me to solder anymore wires making it longer. The alarm install took long enough.
Play around with it and you'll find out the best way to install it.
UPDATE!
It's been 6 weeks and I'm not real happy with this. It does have to do with where I have it located but I think it should be more senstive even though I do not have it in the optimum place. I took some double-sided tape and taped it to a hard surface. It was just hanging by a wire tie which didn't work out well at all. Again, you have to play with it and mounting it to a hard surface as oppose to wire tying it to a wire loom.

This product is fantastic, the charger fits into even the most shallow cigarette lighters (like my vw) and runs everything. On mine I run cellphone, gps, radar without any problems, and could also charge my ipod with the extra usb. The cable isn't long enough to annoy you or short enough to stay in the way while you drive, I would definitely recommend this over anything else on amazon for a multi-port charger.

Cobra ESD 9210CS Vehicle Radar Detector Review

I'm selling this item used, but that's NOT going to effect this rating. I'm an honest person.
I bought my Cobra for $99. This is the best radar detector you can buy for under $400 as far as I know, and I know a lot of speedsters and mechanics. The next step up from this, in my opinion, would be a Valentine (I think their website is valentine.com or valentine1.com). Those are the best you'd need within reason, and they're $300 more. My friend owns one of these. Passports are almost the same price as Valentines, but give you basically the same quality as a Cobra.
So exactly how much better is a Valentine than a Cobra? About 50% better, I'd say. My friend has one and we were curious. We got one of those double things for the cig. lighter and placed my Cobra 9210 next to his Valentine and went "cruising" around in his beamer. Eventually, we found that the Valentine will give you a heads up about a fraction of a second sooner. You can also adjust the sensitivity and customize it a little more.
I still trust my Cobra to this day, but unfortunately my days of speeding are over after crashing my car. If you're rich, buy a Valentine. If you're normal, these are the next best.

Handstands Jelly Sticky Pad Review

... something so small and simple and inexpensive would end up providing a good mounting surface to mount your GPS receiver to the dash? No, Handstands doesn't promote this product in that fashion (I heard it first at GPS Passion), but believe it or not, it works (I was pretty skeptical - but after reading jbb's review, I figured why not try it?)
This is a very small and thin product (so small you don't even notice it if you have a dark dash) 5.75"L x 3.75"W x 1/8" thick, and this one comes in graphite (black). And that's exactly why I like it -- it's unobtrusive. Now I don't know how it would work for a larger, heavier GPS with a heavier and longer mount, but for my Nuvi 260 (which is less than 6 oz and comes with a really tiny ball mount), it works like a charm. I could have even gotten a smaller pad, and it probably would have worked just fine.
Obviously, if it works as a GPS mounting surface, it no doubt works for its intended purpose (cell phones, iPods, glasses, etc., -- I wouldn't know first-hand). But a word of caution. It would be advisable not to keep it on your dash month after month (natural bleaching of the dash by the sun could leave your dash with an outline of the pad). Just move it around every once and awhile.
Seems rather silly to give such a simple and inexpensive product 5 stars (or this long of a review), but since it does what it isn't even advertised to do, I'll give it 9 out of 10 and a 5-star rating. Now I don't know how this product will perform over time, but since it's easy to take off and clean, I don't see why it shouldn't last for years (but if it doesn't, I'm only out 6 bucks).
EDIT: Handsprings has changed the top surface texture of their sticky pads! I just purchased a second one (my original, I left at a friends house in D.C. -- and I live in SoCal). This new product is NOT the same. It can no longer be used as a GPS mount. Because of this, ignore the review above. The entire pad is less "sticky" than the original, and because of this, it deserves an average rating and not 5 stars.

Whistler's XTR-130 laser/radar detector is as affordable as it is full-featured. With total band protection from radar signals, 360-degree laser detection, Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology, and plenty more, you'll get an effective detector that doesn't break the bank.

3 City Modes/Highway Mode Highway mode provides full audio and visual warning of laser/radar systems while maintaining full sensitivity. Highway mode is the default setting of all Whistler's laser/radar detectors. My neighbor has the GPS Angel V4 and I just ordered this GPS Angel K1. I love this little unit, basically does the same thing as the V4 but is much smaller. Similar to a USB stick! The device allows you to detect red light and speed cameras using a database that is updated weekly. So far I have been very happy with this product and highly recommend it!

WHISTLER XTR-590 LASER/RADAR DETECTOR Review

First off, I'm coming from an older version of radar detector. I upgraded because I recently got an expensive ticket and thought maybe my device just needed some updating.
I did my research and looked for the best based on what I can afford. I am aware of the high end models but they are out of my budget and so they are out of the question. I closed in on this one after I set my price limit and checked for features.
First, feature-wise, this is the most feature-rich detector I found that is below $60. I won't repeat the specs as you can google them anytime. But the feature(s) that stood out the most that helped me decide on this one was the screen display and the voice-alert.
Now, for the test... I drove 2 hours through winding and hilly freeway, then back. Total drive time was 4 hours. For those familiar in Northern Cal, it was from Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe using Highway 50 then back. A perfect test to separate good detectors from not-so-good ones.
I drove by 7 to 9 patrols through the first half of the driving. Then about 8 to 11 patrols in the second half. Some patrols obviously didn't have their radars on but most did. I drove constantly 5 to 10 miles over the limit.
The results:
Not acceptable. Most of the time I did not get enough advanced notice to adjust my speed. The device would only go off after the patrol has become visible and really really close by. And on winding road, we're talking about within 5 to 10 cars close. Luckily on this road they don't usually ticket 10 miles over limit or less. At one instance, one patrol on opposite side even briefly switched on his roof lights on me when I passed him by. I guess just to let me know to slow down. That only means that he was able to read my speed before my radar alerted me of him.
I wanted to return it except I had already thrown away the packaging. I don't recommend this model for whatsoever reason. I know there are cheaper detectors that can sniff cops over the hills and around turns. This one absolutely & conclusively can't do that (unless I've gotten a defective device). If a detector can't do those sniffings, then it's no good at all because those are where they usually hide.
I hope this is helpful enough for anyone trying to make a decision.

The only difference between this detector and the xtr-440 is the compass mode, which I did not find worked well when I bothered to calibrate it, which you have to re-do every time you move it from the mounted position. So now I just don't use that feature, and could have spent a bit less to skip it. Also, when you have the unit on and plugged in to DC power, it will invariably shut itself off with much beeping one hour into your drive. It's not an issue on short drives, but on any car trip of length, be ready to unplug it and plug it back in when it starts shutting itself off every hour.

Beltronics Pro GX65 Radar Detector (Black) Review

The Beltronics GX65 is the best radar detector that I have ever owned. I have had many over the years including the Valentine V1. Although this is a good detector, the GX65 gives me more warning on the signals that matter as well as not having to worry about listening to it go off for the wrong reason (You tell it what you want to not listen to). The other thing that is great about this detector is the pre-warning it gives when you are approaching a red-light camera. It tells you exactly where these are before it is too late.
Very well built, you can immediately tell you are not buying a product that skimps on material. The GX65 also comes with a very well written owners manual that is easy to understand.
Recommend very highly!!

I use Radar Detectors in every vehicle and I have all brands... The most important thing I want to say about this one is... It does NOT have that ever annoying BEEP BEEP that penetrates through your skull that forces you to mute the thing and then you forget it went off and see the source of the detection!! IT HAS A PLEASANT TONE (as pleasant as a tone warning you about a speed trap can be...)!! And it even slowly fades quieter... Oh... I LOVE this detector! I plan on replacing all my others with this model! On a side note.. it is also much moer light weight than others.. so when you hit one of those front-end killing pot holes thatare all over our great nation, it will NOT fall dramatically from you windsheild mount and cause you to swerve throught the highway lane....

RadarHAWK SM Instant Wireless Radar Detector Review

I was excited to get this solar powered device because it was, for the most part, wireless. It's a nice detector but the first problem I ran into was the flimsey double-backed tape method of mounting it to the dash. Would not adhere at all! So I reverted to the windshield mount with suction cups. Better than average adherence. But, since I assumed that "solar powered" meant leave it in the sun, I was quickly disappointed when I discovered that as the unit sat in my car during the heat of the day, the plastic arm apparently could not support the weight of the unit and it literally melted causing the unit to droop. The manufacturer was quick to send another arm, but it melted in the first 24 hours that it sat in the sun. Wait a few months for this one to get the specs right.

Escort Entourage CIS Kit-0016 GPS Vehicle Tracker (Black) Review

This product is very easy to install with only two wires. One for power(must find a constant 12v) and one for ground. After that you just choose a location to hide the device and press the on button. Then you log onto the website and choose a plan, either yearly or monthly. I choose yearly $179/yr because they waive the activation fee.
The product itself has many great features such as text and email alerts, vehicle locating, and vehicle tracking. The actual gps locations are usually very accurate but they are sometimes off. For example: I press locate when i know my vehicle is parked in front of my house but when it gives me my location it says my vehicle is next door at the neighbors house. I would give this product 5 out of 5 if it didn't have such an UNRELIABLE NETWORK. I set my device to text me if the motion sensor senses vibration, if my vehicle is stolen, or if it logs out of the network. I have received a text multiple times in the past month saying my device has logged off the network which basically means the device is off. There is no way of locating or tracking it until the network is back up. Sometimes its offline for 5-10 minutes, sometimes i've noticed it down for hours. I have since emailed customer service and this is what they are saying:
"We are currently having intermittent issues with devices being able to communicate over our wireless partners wireless network. We are working to resolve the situation as soon as possible."
This would be a good explanation if it happened maybe once or twice since owning the device, but it has happened at least 8 or 9 times and i have the texts alerts to prove it. This is very unreliable because at any of these times your vehicle could be stolen and you would have no way to track it until they fix whatever issues they are having for the day.
I also bought this product because at CES 2010 they announced an iphone app coming in January, currently there is only an app for blackberrys. It is now February and no iphone app available which is very disappointing.
For this review i gave only 2 stars mainly for the ease of installation and great features. I wouldn't give it more than 2 stars because I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this product to friends or family members knowing that there are ongoing issues with the network. At this point it is just too unreliable to recommend but I will keep this review updated if anything changes.

I have been very impressed by this detector. It does what it's supposed to do and comes with no frills unlike the other more expensive detectors with voice, compass, GPS...etc
The only drawback I see from this detector (as with most detectors) is that it's pretty hopeless when it's up against Laser (Lidar) guns. When you hear the warning, it's already too late to react. It's not sensitive enough to pick up reflected/refracted laser signals from the cars ahead. And I doubt the rearward facing laser sensor is of any real use either.
And sometimes, it falses on the emergency services band (giving an ambulance-like siren tone).
But overall, it's a decent detector, and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a good radar detector without overshooting the $$$$range.

The only downside to this radar detector is to set the compass. You will need a retail store parking lot (empty) to drive in circles (3 times) to set the compass. After that the radar detector is such a beauty. It will detect all the bands specified in the description, I know it for a fact. It will detect a speed radars about a mile and a half away in any direction. In open highway it will go as far as 2 1/2 miles. This product has definitly saved me from several tickets.

First, I want to clarify from the other review that said this only had 3 usable ports and 1 for the cigarette lighter only. This didn't make sense to me because a normal cig. lighter is typically used for other DC items. The fact is, there is one marked for a cig. lighter, and the other 3 cannot. But all 4 can be used for any electronics. There are 4 12V-DC power sockets.
Second, the size is not that bad for having 4 ports. I ordered the 3-port and 4-port and they're both the same size.
I've been using this with a GPS, Sirius radio, and phone charger with no problems. I'm sure I'll be able to add more items as well.
UPDATE:
After using this for over a year, I have no problems and am glad to have the extra ports. Many times I've used all four ports plus an additional one in my vehicle. I have it sitting loosely in a van and it takes a beating well. Every once in awhile I have to wiggle one of the cables, or pull it out and plug it back in, but it works! I'm definitely happy with this.

It's rugged, it's heavy, is metal and I like it. I haven't ridden with it yet as it's in the 20s right now but it looks and feels great comes with a variety of hardware to insure it fits your bike.I only wish that the base had some padding on it instead of rubber washers to keep a buffer between the mount and your tank/gas cap... All in all nice product for the price. Will review further, pending warmer weather

The Good:
- Brilliant concept by using the iPhone as a display unit
- Excellent display: speedometer, car voltage, compass.
- Easy to read while driving (I mounted it below my factory GPS unit)
- Easy installation of iRadar app
- Locations of Photo Radar
- Power adapter with iPhone power USB plug in
The Bad:
- Too many false alarms, X & K bands
- Ka alert did not beep until cop was in sight, about 50 yards
- Lack of sunvisor clip
- Black mirror finish scratces very easilyThe Ugly:
- Display often resets to iPhone home screen, between 20 minutes to an hour
- Have to reset functions to your liking after display resets to iPhone home screen; city/highway mode, turn on/off multiple bands, auto mute etc.
- Power cord is too short for a cleaner installation.
I have tested the iRadar for 2 road trips in the last 10 days (LA to San Diego and LA to Las Vegas) and both were quite frustrating experiences. Cobra hits home with the concept but needs many tweeking on the unit. Did they even have engineers used them for a few weeks before retailing them? I would check back with Cobra after 2 years, and perhaps most glitches will be gone by then
Save your time and money, buy a higher end radar detector to save you from speeding tickets. This unit looks cool and that's about it.

Cigarette Lighter Plug Dual Socket Adapter Review

I'm not sure if there's something unusual about the cigarette lighter adapter in my Ford Escape Hybrid, but this dual outlet plug adapter didn't fit in far enough for the side contacts to touch where they needed to for the power to go through it.
It may be my particular outlet in the car, but I'd definitely check to make sure you have a fairly deep cig. lighter outlet for this to work.
The company did respond pretty quickly, but it would have cost them and me more than it was worth for a $4 item to send it back and try to get me a different one.

Beltronics STi Driver Radar Detector Review

Here is my "short list" of the top performing windshield mount radar detectors which are available from any manufacturer and at any price. This list is grouped in order of decreasing performance. Models within a particular group have nearly identical performance:
Valentine V1
Escort Redline
Beltronics STi Driver
Escort 9500ix
Beltronics GX65
Escort 9500i
There you have it. That is the short list of the top performing windshield radar detectors.
In a nutshell, the V1 and the STi are designed primarily for highway driving and long road trips. The models listed in the second group are designed mainly for suburban and city driving since they feature GPS in order to filter out known false alert locations. Those false alerts are caused by either X band or K band microwave automatic door openers and by alarm systems which use radar motion sensors.
The V1 has front and rear antennas plus arrows to indicate where the radar source is located -- front, back, or to the side. Yet the V1 is readily detected by the Spectre radar detector detector (RDD) which is used by police in VA and by the DSP in Texas to nab motorists who are using radar detectors. The STi, on the other hand, is completely immune to detection by the Spectre RDD or any other RDD since the STi does not emit any type of microwave radiation. In short, the STi truly is a stealth radar detector and its steath makes the STi worth its weight in gold.
I have extensively road tested both the V1 and the STi. Both perform very similarly in terms of overall performance, with the V1 having a very slight edge. Yet the STi's stealth, combined with its superior quietness when used in cities or other suburban areas makes the STi the clear winner in my book. The STi, unlike the V1, is also extraordinarily easy to program in order to configure its settings to perfectly suit your needs. My one major caveat regarding the STi is that its built-in speaker isn't very loud. But this issue is easily solved by installing the extremely loud amplified remote speaker which Beltronics includes with the STi. You can hear the remote speaker with the top down and with the radio blaring.
In short, the Beltronics STi Driver is my favorite windshield mount radar detector. It is so good that I use it all the time even though I also have the Escort 9500ci remote installed radar detector and laser shifter system installed in my car. I always operate one or the other radar detector in bar graph signal strength display mode with the other radar detector in radar frequency display mode. This way I not only know how strong a radar threat is, but also the specific nature of the radar threat. For example, 24.7 frequency Ka radar guns are relatively easy to detect, but 35.5 frequency Ka radar guns are harder to detect since these radar guns have very long and narrowly tapered radar antennas. You have to slow down immediately when detecting 35.5 Ka radar since most of the time there is no easy way to determine just how far away the 35.5 radar gun really is.
Finally, although the Beltronics STi Driver is my favorite windshield mount radar detector for my particular driving needs, it may not be the most ideally suited radar detector for you. For example, if most of your driving (or my driving) is suburban/city driving, then I would pick one of the radar detectors which I listed in the second group. On the other hand, if you are a road warrior who logs hundreds of interstate miles every month and if you frequently travel through VA or TX, then the STi Driver is your only real choice. Excluding these two states, then the V1 also is an excellent choice, and at that point it boils down to your own personal preferences as to what features between these two radar detectors which are most important to you.
If you buy a used STi, keep in mind that most likely it will not have any warranty. If you buy an STi from an unauthorized dealer, then it will have no warranty whatsoever. If you buy a used STi, then you should be willing to send it to Beltronics and have it flashed with their latest firmware which addresses several issues and which improves overall performance. Yes, there will be a fee for this service, but on the other hand, a used STi with the latest firmware flash will perform exactly like a brand new STi. Something to think about.
So, there you have it! I always try to cut to the chase and write unbiased product reviews.

The Whistler 1793SE is a full-featured laser/radar detector outfitted with the latest technologies and the greatest conveniences, from advanced VG-2 and POP mode alerts and detection to digital voice memo recording and advanced safety alerts.With the change in time also comes change in technology, and radar gun manufacturers now include something called POP Mode, which makes it harder for radar detectors to detect them. Got this for a Christmas gift. It does not work at all. Well, it beeps and all and talks, etc. But I passed by four cops the first week with no alerts to slow down. I live in one state and work in another state. It catches neither local police nor state troopers in either state. Everyday, I pass by the same speed trap and of course, get no alert of any kind. This is a poor product overall. I am returning it for someone to play with as a discounted toy.

Cobra XRS 9540 High Performance12 Band Radar/Laser Detector Review

This little demon has already probably saved me 3 speeding tickets. I feel absolutely no guilt using it because I've come to realize what a cash cow speeding tickets are for the local and state governments. Some people don't like radar detectors because they're 'always beeping', but I've found they're usually a dumbass who doesn't have the machine set correctly. It comes ready to detect 6 bands, but I've found in Central Florida that Ka and Laser are mainly what Police and Sheriff use. So if you stick with Highway Mode with only Ka and Laser active, you'll be pleasantly suprised.
Some Major Caveats:
1) I only go 10-20 (usually closer to 10) over at most. If you're going faster than that, you may still get a ticket because the Ka band travels much faster than the old X Band....it may however end up being a lesser fine because you'll be able to slow down a bit.
2) This works best when cops cheat and lock their doppler. It is illegal to do so (but since when have they cared), but in this case, it works in your favor. You can sniff it out quite far in advance.
3) The most dangerous areas when the cop uses the radar gun right as you drive by. When you're within 15 feet of a radar gun is the most difficult time to be able to do anything.
4) The power must be ON for the thing to work. I know that sounds silly, but if the power cord becomes loose (someone or something snags it) from the cigarette lighter for any reason, you're a sitting goose.
A friend of mine who is more of a lead foot than I uses a Valentine One. I'm not willing to put $500 into a radar detector (yet)....but for now, I like this one.
The really cool thing is that sometimes even though a patrol car is sitting by the side of the road, they're not running radar! There have been dozens of times when I'll realize I drove about 20 over past a patrol car, and the detector never went off.....and the cop never came after me! I like knowing when radar is present. When you get used to it, you'll feel quite vulnerable in your car without one.

This product fulfills my need for charging multiple devices while traveling in my car, however I have noticed that I need to keep an eye on the charging lights for each device because they have a tendency to slip out of the charging socket. They dont fall out but come out just enough to lose contact with the charge. I am not sure whether its my devices or a general problem. I can live with it. Other than that the product is fine.

Whistler PRO-58 Pro-Series Radar/Laser Detector with POP Detection Review

I was a bit skeptical about this detector after reading the single bad Amazon review. There is also not much on the web about this specific model, although there are some good reviews about the Pro 73 and 1793SE (similar models) to be found using Google. I finally contacted Whistler directly and discovered that there are no differences between the 58 and 73 in terms of their antenna chassis or ability to detect radar/laser. Since I don't need any of the extra features of the 73, I went ahead and purchased the 58 (w/Radar Roy's recommendation; radarbusters.com). Another factor that influenced my decision was that there are only a few budget (< $100) detectors that can detect POP.
During the first week of use (in Houston), I've had a few falses near stores (about the same number as I had with my friend's Escort 7500) and one verified cop car on the highway (K band) this morning. The detector gave me about a 10 s warning before I saw it passing in the opposite direction. I'm guessing the previous reviewer may have been overlooking the fact that this is a RADAR/LASER dectector, not a cop car detector.
If there's anything negative to report about this detector, it's that it LOOKS cheap, and you're not going to have the same kind of range as with the $200-300+ detectors (esp. Ka band). However, a 2 mile (speedzones.com) warning is sufficient for me to ease off the gas (I am a "casual" speeder, if there is such a thing) and no detector is foolproof, so I'm happy with this purchase and the $100-250 saved.

I did a lot of research on Amazon trying to find the best option before buying this.. I looked into the spray cans, the other license plate covers, a bunch of stuff, and all of it seemed to have bad reviews and not work.. this one had so-so reviews and it was my last option so I figured I'd give it a try and risk my money... well, big waste of time, and I've come to the conclusion there is no good option to cover your plate from the cameras.
This item is pretty worthless, if a cop is behind you and sees the license plate at any angle other then straight on (so obviously when hes passing you) you can't read the license plate, and the copy will stop you and give you a ticket for this - its not legal. I'm sorry I spent the money on this product.

I had the rmr-c475 it was very good but couldnt see the screen, so I purchased the phantom. because of the lights.the lights r very small and still cant be heard if the music is playing at a decent level. lasar detection goes off quite a bit here where i live but police do not have laser guns here. very bulky, does have much better detecting from rear. other than that my reservations r still out on the detections but if it is built on the same line as the rmrc475 it will do a good job. Needs to be louder

Whistler XTR-265 Laser-Radar Detector (Grey) Review

I will admit up front that I bought this unit based solely on price. That, and the fact I am a long time buyer of Whistler radar detectors. Like another reviewer here, my first experience with a radar detector was a now ancient "fuzz buster" that never really failed on me, but merely became obsolete over time. I took a long break over the years from radar detectors mostly due to the fact that I am older now and hardly ever in that much of a hurry. Unfortunately under the disguise of supposedly only being interested in saving our lives, radar traps and pull overs from rolling radar has increased dramatically over the last few years where I live. Severe financial problems on the state and local level has been holding us in its iron grip here long before it became fashionable nation wide. So now that things have gone from normally flat busted to fiddling with financial collapse, the police in the state have expanded their role as peace makers to that of rolling revenue agents. There was a long time here where friendly warnings where handed out generously for a 40 plus year driver like myself cruising a couple of miles over the speed limit. The police had bigger fish they were after. A true vehicular desperado I was not. Those days of yore have unfortunately vanished in the wake of the towns and states flashing empty pockets all around.
In an effort not to see my own contribution to the problem come at the hands of purportedly "saving my life", I purchased this Whistler 265 model about 6 months ago. I was quite taken aback by the wide range of prices on these units at first. The last time I bought one there was perhaps a $50 price difference between the economy model and a true space age unit. Now it can be as high as $400 or more. Since this 265 was a Whistler that was capable of picking up all the radar technology currently available, and cost about $45, I decided this was the one for me. All I can say from my own experience with this fine unit is I can only imagine what those higher priced models really do, for this 265 seems to perform it all quite nicely. Simply put, its the best $45 I have spent in a very long time. The 265 is easy to install on your windshield with the bracket provided, and a coil style cord plugs into your cigarette lighter, or 12 volt outlet that just about all cars provide these days. (If you prefer to install on your dash or elsewhere, a velcro strip will hold this unit easily). As far as features, the 265 seems to have all one could ask for. This Whistler provides tone alerts, quiet modes, numeric icon displays, alert priority, and even a vehicle battery saver. It also has both visual and audible alerts, and a volume control. As far as actually detecting and warning you of any radar in the area, mine has so far never missed a beat. Although I am not much of a heavy footer that needs as much advanced warning as possible, I would have to say that any warning that does come from the 265 has been in advance enough to save me from being picked up in about 80% of the cases, or more. It is especially capable in picking up stationary radar, which although a lot of advertisements for these devices claim has gone out of style in favor of rolling radar, is still well in vogue here in my neck of the woods. I have picked up signals so far in advance in some of the stationary cases that at times I felt the the detector is picking up something else. Then lo and behold, smokey appears on the side of the road. For rolling radar, the advance warning is a little more random, but still very effective in my opinion. It is omni directional and will pick up a radar signal far off the side of you as easily as it does ahead, or behind you. I love this little unit and feel it is personally the best deal in detectors that there is going on the market presently.
In conclusion, I should mention that I live in a small town. There are no real heavily congested areas, or locales where there is any real city atmosphere. So my detector doesn't really have to work that hard at distinguishing alarms and doors openers from the real McCoy. If you live in a city or any form of heavily congested area with a lot of commerce, it very well may be a good idea to move up to a higher priced, more sensitive model. Personally I feel that the only difference between the high ticket radar detectors and this model is their ability to differentiate between real speed radar, and any other device that uses the same technology. That, and perhaps a little more technology in giving you a shade more warning. For a small town atmosphere like where I live, I honestly feel that the Whistler XTR-265 is all the radar detector you should ever need. Unless you simply love to speed, or the local police seem to have a special fondness for you, why pay more. A good, solid, dependable unit. Highly recommended...

Whistler XTR-265 Laser-Radar Detector (Grey) Overview

Like the entry-level XTR-145, Whistler's XTR-265 is an affordable, full-featured laser/radar detector. With total band protection from radar signals, 360-degree laser detection, Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology, and plenty more, you'll get an effective detector that doesn't break the bank. The XTR-265 adds Whistler's patented POP mode, a numeric icon display, dim/dark modes, safety warning system (SWS) alerts, and the "stay alert" function to the feature list.

Total Band Protection Provides Complete Band Coverage of all Laser, Radar (X, K, and Ka bands), VG-2, and Safety Radar bands.
Numeric Icon Display The XTR-265's bright numeric icon display offers easy-to-read icons to indicate power, city mode, radar band identification, and signal strength. It adds a seven-segment digital display to show signal strength indication and band identification.
POP Mode Alerts There are new guns out there that operate just like the instant-on guns of the past but with a very tough new twist--POP mode. This new gun is a normal K and Ka band radar gun detectable by most radar detectors made in the past 30 years until it's in POP mode. When the gun is in POP Mode and activated, a brief burst of energy, less than 1/15 of a second, is transmitted and the vehicle's speed is quickly acquired. A detector without POP Mode detection capability cannot respond to this brief transmission. This one can.
360 Degree Protection Units with 360 protection detect signals from all radar, laser, VG-2 and safety radar systems wherever they come from; front, rear or from the side.
VG-2 Cloaking The VG-2, also known as a "radar detector detector," is a special receiver used by police to detect signals radiated by a radar detector. Thanks to Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology, your detector will remain invisible to VG-2 detection.
3 City Modes/Highway Mode Highway mode provides full audio and visual warning of laser/radar systems while maintaining full sensitivity, and is the default setting of Whistler laser/radar detectors. City mode helps reduce the annoyance of automatic door openers and burglar alarm alerts by providing an initial alert (same distance as Highway Mode) then remaining quiet unless the signal strength becomes very strong. When the signal increases the unit will alert briefly to notify you of the change in signal strength.
Quiet/Auto Quiet Modes Pressing QUIET before a signal is detected engages Auto Quiet Mode, which automatically reduces the audio level after the initial warning to a low audio level setting. Pressing QUIET during a radar/laser encounter silences audio alerts, while allowing visual alerts to keep you informed.
Dim/Dark Mode Dim/Dark Mode reduces the illumination of the display. Dim or dark can be engaged during an alert. In Dark Mode, the display goes dark for as long as a signal is being detected and for 20 seconds after, then the display returns to the dimmer setting.
Stay Alert Whistler's exclusive Stay Alert feature tests your alertness on long trips.
Vehicle Battery Saver Mode The Vehicle Battery Saver Mode automatically shuts off your detector within 3 hours if you forget to turn it off. The timer is reset if the detector is turned off, unplugged or any button is pressed before the 6 hours have expired. The detector will alert you with an audible and visual warning before it shuts off.
Safety Warning System--SWS This relatively new radar is not for speed detection at all, it is used to keep you informed of highway safety. Transmitters are installed and programmed (for example: in emergency vehicles) to make you aware of possible situations that may require your attention, such as: ambulance vehicles that are moving or stationary, road hazards ahead, road construction delays or detours, etc.
Alert Priority When two or more signals are received at the same time, the alert priority is: Laser, VG-2, Speed Radar, Safety Radar.
Example: If X band is alerting, then suddenly a VG-2 signal is detected, the VG-2 warning will override the X band alert.
Twin Alert Periscopes Whistler's Low Profile Alert Periscopes provide an added attention getting visual alert. The two extra LEDs flash on and off when the unit alarms to provide a unique visual alert.

ARKON AP020 Adapter Plate 90mm Circular Adhesive Dash / Console Disc with 3M Adhesive Review

This disc is a replacement for the original that shipped with the Arkon dashboard mount (for my radar detector.)
I had originally ordered my mount with an included disc. Because the detector was to be used in two cars ordered an extra disc (AP020) from Arkon. The second disc was of slightly different form (no lip at the edge) and material.
The original failed after 4 months due to warping in the strong California sun. The AP020 disc did not warp. I ordered a replacement AP020 from Arkon and it has performed very well.

Cobra XRS 9440 High Performance 12 Band Radar/Laser Detector Review

This has to be one of the most attractive electronic items I have seen in a long time. Unfortunately, this "Chrome won't get you home" without a ticket.
The description of this item is technically correct but very misleading. While it is a 12-band device here's the meaning behind those 12 bands:
Radar signals include
X Band - very short range detection capability
K Band - very short range detection capability
Ka Superwide - very short range detection capability
Ku Band - used in Europe - no value in North America
VG-2 alert - detectible to currently used VG-2 - undetectible only to unused VG-2 radar detector detectors
Spectre-1 detectible to currently used Spectre 2, 3, and 4. - undetectible only to unused Spectre 1 radar detector detectors
Laser signals include
LTI 20-20 - short range detection, if detects laser, you have already been clocked
Ultra Lyte - short range detection, if detects laser, you have already been clocked
ProLaser - short range detection, if detects laser, you have already been clocked
ProLaser III - short range detection, if detects laser, you have already been clocked
Safety signals include
Safety Alert® - not yet widely implemented - not a frequency used directly for speed enforcement
Strobe Alert® - not yet widely implemented - not a frequency used directly for speed enforcement
So you get
- a few short-range radar detection frequencies,
- a few laser detection frequencies (most of the time all too short range to protect you)
- a couple radar detector detector frequencies that detect obsolete and widely abandoned radar detector detectors, meaning where radar detectors are illegal this unit is not doing anything but broadcast that you have a radar detector...
- a couple unimplemented safety warning frequencies
Additionally, these units are notorious for giving off interference of their own which can be detected by other radar detectors!
The design is pretty but because of the light color and chrome parts, reflects off the dash. The internal speaker is not loud enough to hear over music or in a noisy environment. The power cord and mounting options make it very conspicuous. The brackets are not known for their durability.
Overall this unit gives a false sense of security, is detectible in states where they're illegal, and has a marginal form factor.
Do your own research before buying units like this - you don't get much more than a pretty package that makes a lot of noise when it shouldn't and not enough noise when it should.

EXCELLENT mount! I installed this in a 2006 G35 Sedan without any problems at all and it looks like it belongs. For a regular Joe/Jane, this mount will work just fine.
As for it being an old mount that could be made in a machine shop 20 years ago--well, that is under a pretty BIG assumption that everyone can machine parts or has the time to find a shop that would do such a small job for you (at a similar price) umm.... yeah... good luck!

Any one looking for a good radar detector, here it is. Of course I could have spent $500-1,000 on a better radar/laser detector or system, but who wants to do that?? It does it's job and everything I expected it to do! I traveled out of state during the holidays (holidays=many cops) and it saved my butt 3 times on the way there, and 2 times on the way back. It already has paid for itself and then some! Not to mention the two times it saved me this morning on my way to work! The only thing I was worried about when purchasing a detector was, would it give me enough time to slow down, the answer is YES. By the time I brake to the desired speed limit, I look around for a few seconds, then when I think it is a false alarm, there's the cop. Overall, great purchase and worth every cent!

Cobra ESD 7000 6-Band ESD Radar/Laser Detector Review

I've always wanted a radar detector, especially I got pulled over for driving 9miles above the speed limit! After extensive amount of research, I wanted a Valentine 1 (V1) or a Escort Passport since they are supposed to be the best money can buy. One of my friend has a Escort Passport and I've always been very impressed by it, just not the $300 price tag.
So here I am, wanting something that I can't afford. Nobody knows how that feels right? *wink* Then from a deal site I found this Cobra ESD-7000, I read many (75 last time I checked) reviews for this detector and it's got about 4 out of 5 overall rating. For under 50bux, I think this is a risk I am willing to take. It's been about 2 month and a half now, here's my take:
Pros:
1-Very sensitive and alerts before troopers can get a locked reading on you. (which should be the most important thing when you are buying a detector)
2-Good Design and display, V, K, Ka, and Laser (LIDAR) detection, I rarely see any laser warnings but it's good to have it in for future uses.
3-Auto mute system and city mode, which reduces alarm level when you are near an automatic door or other sensors.
4-long cord which enables the detector to be placed in many places in your car, an important thing to watch for is that make sure you place it in a place where it can have a clear view of the rear window, otherwise the 360 degree detection won't work well.
Cons:
1-Sensitive, and none directional warning. I've found myself looking around for cops when that thing goes off, it only tells you there is one near by, but not which direction. V1 can warn you of which direction and what type of warning it is (false alarm). This can get a bit annoying since it's hard to drive in the city with the alarm going off all the time if there's a auto-door around, in long term, it might give you a heart attack. I know it scared my mom bad when she was riding with me.
2-Self test, it can make just one beep for the test but it actually checks for every single freaken band and makes a out of tune high school band practice sound. No way to turn it off so everytime you start the car, it will do the same thing over and over again.
In closing, I've driven at night where police waits at the exit facing the highway or on top of the bridge gunning at me, I was always able to see them and slow to reasonable speed (say 8miles above the limit). I live in upstate NY, troopers here are smart, when you can see them, it's too late. Not anymore with my cobra, Bite on this, trooper. (that line reminded of the movie super trooper for some reason)

P.S. Many people asked me if this is legal, I can tell all of you in confidence that it is legal in all states except Viginia and D.C., plus our friendly neighbor Canada (who wont' be friendly anymore if you have this in, TRUST ME). Oh yeah, another reviewer is right, police has to have the radar on in order for it to detect, so don't give up on the product if you seen a cop nearby and the alarm is not going off.

Cobra XRS 9500 11-Band Radar/Laser Detector with DigiView Data Display Review

The features sound cool but would be really impressive if they worked. This detector WAS going to replace my old passport, however, I'm thinking not. The range on it is terrible, I read a review elsewhere stating that the only thing this detector will do is let you know you have a ticket... I should have listened to that review. I've actually tested out over 1,000 miles with my Passport next to this XRS 9500 and my passport does pick up more erroneous readings, however it also picks radar up to a 1 mile before the 9500. The 9500 also goes from 1 bar to 2 bars to full strength right away, unlike the competition. Let's face it, usually at 1 or 2 bars your still deciding if you should brake or not. I would stay away from this detector. The safety alerts showed a train in Wal-Mart (By the way there are no railroad tracks around for 2 miles), a VG1 alert at my house (totally residential area and highly impossible) and other inaccuracies that just don't add up. Good luck in your detector decisions, buckle up and drive safe! (That was safe.. not necessarily slow)

Cobra SL3 GPS Speed and Red Light Camera Locator Review

The device itself is okay. You have to memorize what type of threat each sound represents because the visual display only indicates proximity, not threat type. The sounds themselves are a little quirky - reminds me of R2D2. It can be hard to differentiate the different sounds at first.
The real problem is that Cobra's database is not very good. Even after updating the database, the unit sees maybe one out of five red light camera intersections that I come across. I live in metro Washington, DC and northern Virginia and parts of Maryland. I will be buying an Escort soon and probably throw this away. It may be cheap ($50) but it's not worth the dashboard space it takes up.

The XRS 9845 continues the strong Cobra tradition of excellent sensitivity to speed detection, which is, after all, why we really buy these things. The combined audible/visible alerts are instantaneous and clear, and the Voice Alert feature removes the need to memorize which alert tone goes with which band... no small consideration when you're dealing with 15 bands. Of the six Cobra detectors that I have now owned, this unit's IntelliShield feature makes it the absolute best at blocking spurious alerts from "leaky" detectors in nearby cars as well as from things like automatic door openers and cell phone towers.
Thanks to the on-screen/voice prompts and the well-done owner's manual, customizing the programmable features is a snap. I love loud music on my Bose system when I'm in the car alone, and I could have used a note in the advertising about the decibel level of alerts at full volume. My primary problem with radar detectors has historically been difficulty seeing the display when bright sunlight was washing over it, but the blue ExtremeBright graphics on the XRS 9845 have resolved this for me.
